Our Story

Arya’s Light: Breaking Chains, Building Futures

Founded in San Francisco by Venu Bhakhri and Alok Arora to honor their beloved daughter Arya Bhakhri Arora, our nonprofit confronts a devastating injustice: 8.4 million girls in India are stripped of childhood and education, forced into labor while brothers attend school. Census data reveals 44.5% of India’s 10.1 million child laborers (ages 5-14) are girls—trapped in fields, factories, and homes, working 3+ hours daily beyond boys’ burdens. Poverty breeds impossible choices: 40% of girls from marginalized families drop out by age 12 (NSSO), and for every 100 boys in secondary school, only 81 girls remain (UDISE+ 2021-22). Why? 68% of families prioritize sons as "breadwinners" (UNICEF), sacrificing daughters to labor or early marriage to fund uniforms and books. COVID deepened this crisis, pushing 250,000+ girls into labor or wedlock (CRY). Arya’s Light shatters this cycle—funding girls’ education, supporting families, and teaching boys equality. Because every girl holds a universe of potential.
